A Time of Big Fish – and a Big Thanks

I’m writing this during New Zealand’s strict Covid-19  lockdown. Recent events have seemed unimaginable – as does the very abrupt finish to the 2019-2020 New Zealand fishing season. We are all affected by this in varying ways, so my thoughts go out to you all and please stay safe.

This season more than any, I would like to thank all the wonderful supporters that have made the past season the very very best ever! It was such a pleasure and a privilege to help so many anglers into countless happy experiences and memories. The greatest aspect about this (from a guides perspective), is the diversity of experience – from coaching beginners, teaching fly casting, stream craft lessons, small streams with technical dry fly angling, full on backcountry missions and of course those boom or bust days seeking out the most massive and challenging mouse feeder trout.

The season will be remembered as one of the very best. It produced some of the largest trout we’ve seen, and they were in the most phenomenal condition. It was a season full of exciting adventures and joy.  Images just don’t do justice how good this season was, but I’ll try…

Family Fly Fishing Fun

It was heartening to see many more families enjoying nature via fly fishing this season. I’ve guided fathers and sons, fathers and daughters and full family groups. We often live separate lives distanced from the family unit. Fly fishing is a great way for a family to get together around an outdoor experience and learn new skills. It’s always funny when children see how passionate Mum and Dad can be and of course when parents watch on with glee and pride as their children succeed in catching their first fish and develop a feel for fly fishing, long may this continue.

New film production

Like many of you around the world New Zealand is in a “lockdown period”. I am taking this as a gift and using the time to move forward with future projects.

The first project is to complete a new and very comprehensive video production. I have been planning this video for some years and as many of you know, most days on the water I film. That means I have accumulated a huge amount of footage that I am finally working my way through. I finished the first chapter using over 50 hours of footage to create a 15 minute film. The production focus is on original trout fly patterns interlaced with stories about people, places and fish. It also incorporates methods and tips developed over the past 30 years. I’m super excited about this and still have a way to go but will keep you informed about developments and the release.

Trout fly crafting

I’m always expanding upon this aspect of my business.  Currently, I am super busy tying orders for the winter season, next season and I’m adding new fly designs regularly.

It’s important to note that they are made by myself and most materials are sourced from New Zealand suppliers. I have always been passionate about buying New Zealand-made and now even more so. If you are interested I welcome any custom orders and often ship these all round the world. Please note that due to Covid 19 restrictions, shipping may be delayed. However, now is a great time to order as since I have more time I can give extra special effort and value to you.

You are welcome to call or email me anytime

I also have listings on Trademe https://www.trademe.co.nz/Members/Listings.aspx?member=2169119

Once again, my deepest thanks to all of my supporters and I wish you well in these difficult times.

Please feel free to contact me any time and I look forward to offering you exciting new products and services over the next few months. I’ll leave you with this image from a few weeks ago that folks seem to like: it’s me and a new riverside friend …
